Mellos was a friend that King Viserys I Targaryen could trust.

Grand Maester Mellos Impact in the Series

In 112 AC, Maester Mellos took over as Grand Maester from Runciter. It was known that Laenor Velaryon wasn’t interested in women, but he pushed for the match between her and Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen. He also told Prince Daemon Targaryen, King Viserys I Targaryen’s troublesome brother, that he should forgive his brother.

Viserys may have caused the fire at Harrenhal in 120 AD that killed Lord Lyonel Strong and his son, Ser Harwin Strong. Mellos wrote about this idea. Mellos says that the king had come to believe the rumors that his grandkids by his daughter Rhaenyra, were jerks born to Harwin. Because of this, he wanted to hide the truth and kill the man who had shamed his daughter.

While sitting on the Iron Throne, King Viserys fell and cut his hand open. Mellos tried to treat the wound but failed. Princess Rhaenyra flew her magician, Gerardys, from Dragonstone to help her dad. Gerardys quickly cut off two of the king’s fingers, which saved his life.

Mellos died one night in 127 AC when he passed out while going up the winding stairs. Rhaenyra had Gerardys take over as Grand Maester in his place. Queen Alicent Hightower, on the other hand, wanted Maester Alfador, who worked for House Hightower, to be put in charge.

Viserys didn’t choose between the two options because both attacked him. He told his wife and daughter that the Citadel would choose the new leader. In the end, Archmaester Orwyle was chosen by the Conclave to be the new Grand Maester.

Archmaester Gyldayn often used Mellos’s written reports in his works. Gyldayn thought Maester Gerardys’s potions and tinctures worked better than Mellos’s regular leechings.
