Ser Laenor Velaryon and Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen had a son named Prince Jacaerys Velaryon, Jace. He was their first child. Rhaenyra made Jacaerys Prince of Dragonstone heir to the Iron Throne, when she became queen during the Dance of the Dragons. Jacaerys was a dragon rider, and Vermax was her dragon.

Harry Collett and Leo Hart portray Jacaerys in the television adaptation of House of the Dragon.

Prince Jacaerys Velaryon|How He Looks Like, Character and Attitude

Jace used to be a big boy and is now a good-looking teen. He had brown eyes and hair like his brothers Lucerys and Joffrey. He also had a pug nose. This made a lot of people at court think that Ser Harwin Strong, Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen’s sworn guardian, was their father.

Jace was responsible, brave, and clever when it came to politics. He looked out for his family. As a squire, Jacaerys learned how to use weapons well.

Birth and Early Life

Born at the end of the year 114 AD, Prince Jacaerys was the son of Rhaenyra Targaryen and Ser Laenor Velaryon. Rhaenyra was the daughter of King Viserys I Targaryen and Princess of Dragonstone. Lord Corlys Velaryon, Laenor’s father, told him he couldn’t name the boy Joffrey in honor of his late friend Ser Joffrey Lonmouth. The child was instead given the traditional Velaryon name Jacaerys. His friends and family called him “Jace.”

Soon after, Viserys’ second wife, Queen Alicent Hightower, gave birth to Jace’s uncle, Prince Daeron Targaryen. Viserys made Jacaerys and Daemon share a wet nurse until they were weaned so they wouldn’t fight like Rhaenyra and Alicent. He thought that the fact that they were milk brothers would make a difference.

In 115 AC, Jace’s brother Lucerys was born. In 117 AC, Joffrey was born. Rhaenyra’s boys were each given a dragon egg while they were still in the cradle by royal order. There were whispers that the eggs would never hatch from people who didn’t believe the children’s father was their father. But the birth of three dragons proved them wrong. Jacaerys gave her hatchling the name Vermax. Septon Eustace says that King Viserys told the young Jacaerys that the Iron Throne would be his one day while they were in court.

The king couldn’t make peace between his sons and grandkids. Aegon, Aemond, and Daeron Targaryen, Alicent’s three sons, became fierce rivals to Rhaenyra’s three sons because they thought the Velaryons stole their birthright, the Iron Throne. The six boys were forced to be close to each other by going to feasts, training at arms together, and learning under the same maesters, which made their dislike for each other even stronger.

At the end of the year 118 AD, Rhaenyra told the king that her two oldest sons would marry their cousins, the daughters of Prince Daemon Targaryen and Lady Laena Velaryon. The four-year-old Jacaerys was going to marry the two-year-old Baela.

Name of the The “Strong Boys”

Ser Laenor Velaryon died in 120 AD, when his son Jacaerys was six years old. King Viserys I Targaryen went to High Tide on Driftmark for the funeral with his family. Prince Aemond Targaryen tried to claim Vhagar, the oldest and biggest dragon, but Jacaerys’s youngest brother Joffrey, caught him. His three cousins were called “strong boys” by Aemond, which was a joke about the idea that Ser Harwin Strong had fathered them. The four boys then got into a fight.

With his knife, Lucerys cut off Aemond’s right eye when he had the upper hand against Jacaerys. After that, King Viserys said that anyone who called his grandchildren “Strongs” again would have their tongues pulled out with hot pincers. Also, Alicent and her sons were to return to King’s Landing, while Rhaenyra and her boys were to stay at Dragonstone.

Rhaenyra Targaryen, Jacaerys’s mother who had lost her husband, married her uncle, Prince Daemon Targaryen, later that same year. At the end of the year, Jace’s half-brother Aegon was born. In 122 AC, Viserys was born next. Unlike their half-brothers, who were Velaryon, Rhaenyra’s younger boys looked like they were from Targaryen.

King Jacaerys’s grandpa, Lord Corlys Velaryon, got sick in the year 126 AD. Because his children Laenor and Laena were dead and Laenor’s oldest son Jacaerys would eventually take over the Iron Throne from his other grandpa and mother, there was a debate about who should take over as Lord of the Tides and Master of Driftmark. Rhaenyra told Corlys that her second son, Lucerys, should be his heir, but Corlys’s oldest nephew, Ser Vaemond Velaryon, said that Rhaenyra’s Velaryon boys were not Laenor’s, but Harwin Strong’s.

Rhaenyra had her husband grab Vaemond and cut off his head. She then fed Vaemond’s body to her dragon, Syrax. Vaemond’s wife, boys Daemion and Daeron Velaryon, and five cousins ran away to King’s Landing to ask the king for justice. Viserys listened to them, but when they called Rhaenyra’s sons jerks, he had each of their mouths cut off.

A cut on Viserys’s hand on the throne made it sick, and people thought he might die. When the king got better on the first day of the year 127 AD, he held a feast to celebrate. Rhaenyra and Alicent showed their love and friendship by being together. But after the king left the feast, Aemond toasted his three Velaryon nephews, calling them “three strong boys” to make fun of their brown hair, brown eyes, and strength. Later that night, Aegon was upset when Jacaerys asked his wife, Helaena Targaryen, to dance, but the Kingsguard stopped them from fighting.

In the “Dance of the Dragons”

In 129 AC, King Viserys I Targaryen passed away while sleeping. His pick for an heir, Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen, and Viserys’s younger half-brother, King Aegon II Targaryen, started a war over who would become king. Queen Rhaenyra was a black person, and Aegon was a green person. Ser Criston Cole spoke out against Rhaenyra’s claim at Aegon’s first green council, calling her son, Prince Jacaerys, a jerk.

When the war that became known as the Dance of the Dragons began, Jacaerys was fourteen years old. Vermax, his dragon, was doing great and getting bigger every year. Rhaenyra’s first black council on Dragonstone had Jacaerys and his brother, Prince Lucerys Velaryon, offer to go to the lords of Westeros and ask them to back her claim. Rhaenyra let this happen before making her young boys swear on The Seven-Pointed Star that they would not fight.

On the next day, Rhaenyra was crowned Queen of the Andals, the Rhoynar, and the First Men. At the ceremony, she named Jacaerys Prince of Dragonstone and heir to the Iron Throne. Aegon II sent Rhaenyra terms saying that if she gave in, he would give her Dragonstone, which would later be passed down to Jacaerys. She turned down the offer, though.

Because he was Rhaenyra’s oldest son, Jacaerys was sent on the more difficult task. Lady Jeyne Arryn decided to help Rhaenyra defend the Vale of Arryn with Dragonriders after he flew Vermax to the Eyrie. The sexy Mushroom said that Jeyne offered her help if Jace could make her happy in bed, but Septon Eustace doesn’t believe it.

After meeting with Lords Borrell and Sunderland at Sisterton, Jacaerys got the backing of the Three Sisters. At White Harbor, Jacaerys talked with Desmond Manderly about getting the lord’s youngest daughter to marry Prince Joffrey Velaryon when the war was over.

Grand Maester Munkun said Jacaerys became friendly with Lord Cregan Stark at Winterfell because the prince reminded the lord of a dead younger brother. They promised to be brothers when they were done drinking and hunting together. On the other hand, Eustace said that Jacaerys tried to get Cregan to follow the Faith of the Seven instead of the old gods.

Mushroom says that Jacaerys secretly married Cregan’s half-sister Sara Snow in the Godswood of Winterfell because they fell in love. However, Archmaester Gyldayn doesn’t believe what the fool says. Mushroom also said that Vermax laid dragon eggs in the tunnels under Winterfell. Through the Pact of Ice and Fire, Jacaerys could take over the north. He promised that if he had children, his eldest daughter would marry Cregan’s heir, Rickon Stark.

Prince Aemond Targaryen killed Queen Rhaenyra’s second son, Prince Lucerys, near Storm’s End. Queen Rhaenyra was very sad about it. Mushroom says that Ser Arryk Cargyll was sent to Dragonstone to kill Jacaerys and Joffrey to get back at the people who killed Prince Jaehaerys Targaryen. He was killed by his twin brother, Ser Erryk Cargyll.

In the fight at Rook’s Rest, Princess Rhaenys Targaryen died. Her husband, Lord Corlys Velaryon, was despondent and stopped talking to Rhaenyra. Jacaerys made things right between Corlys and Rhaenyra by making him Hand of the Queen. Jace and his grandpa then started planning an attack on King’s Landing. He sent Prince Joffrey, his younger brother who was still alive, to the Vale. While Lady Baela Targaryen wanted to marry Jacaerys at Dragonstone, Munkun says the prince would rather wait until the war was over.

To make up for losing Arrax at Storm’s End and Meleys at Rook’s Rest, Mushroom says he told the blacks to try to claim the six riderless dragons living on the island of Dragonstone by recruiting Dragonseeds. Munkun, on the other hand, says Jacaery suggested the Sowing of the Seeds. Any person who could master a dragon, the prince promised, would be made a noble. Several Dragonseeds did well in the Red Sowing. Lord Corlys took Addam of Hull in and made him a member of House Velaryon. After Corlys and Jacaerys asked her to, Queen Rhaenyra recognized the Dragonseed as Addam Velaryon and made him the heir to Driftmark.

Aegon, nine, and Viserys, seven, were Jacaerys’ half-brothers. He made sure they were safe by talking to the Prince of Pentos, who decided to take care of the boys. Near the end of the year 129 AC, Aegon and Viserys got on the Gay Abandon to go to Pentos. But in the Gullet, the ship ran into a fleet of warships sent by the Triarchy, which was an ally of the Greens. The Gay Abandon was caught, and its escort ships were sunk or taken. But Aegon the Younger got away on his dragon Stormcloud to Dragonstone to tell the blacks about the attack.

The next battle, the Battle of the Gullet, was between the Triarchy’s fleet, Jacaerys, and four dragonseeds. The blacks looked like they were going to win easily until Vermax flew too low and crashed into a burning kitchen. He may have been hit in the eye by a crossbow bolt or pulled down by a grapnel. Myrish crossbow fights hit Jacaerys until he fell into the water. He jumped free and stuck to the burning wreckage of the ship. While the fight was going on, the Essosi soldiers sacked Driftmark, but the Velaryon fleet was able to push back the Triarchy troops.

After Death Story

The blacks lost a great leader when Jacaerys, Prince of Dragonstone, died. After the Battle on the Honeywine, many people felt even worse, but Rhaenyra Targaryen became determined to take King’s Landing.

Near the end of Dance of the Dragons, Lord Cregan Stark brought an army of Northmen to King’s Landing to keep his promise to Jacaerys before she died. Lady Baela Targaryen, who was engaged to Jace, married Lord Alyn Velaryon.
