Rhys Ifans as Ser Otto Hightower

Otto Hightower was a knight from the House of Hightower. He was the Hand of the King to three kings, but two of them fired him at different times. He was Lord Hightower’s younger brother and Lord Ormund Hightower of Oldtown’s uncle. Alicent Hightower was the second queen of King Viserys I Targaryen, and Ser Gwayne Hightower was the second in charge of the gold cloaks. People remember Otto as a lesson that knowing things isn’t everything.

Ser Otto Hightower Character 7 Greatest Rival

In his time, Otto was seen as very smart but rude, bossy, and haughty. Organizing and driving, he was a man. Prince Daemon Targaryen was Otto’s biggest enemy.

His Contribution in the Series

Ser When Otto became Hand of the King after Prince Baelon Targaryen died, he brought his wife and children to court, including his daughter Alicent. Prince Baelon was King Jaehaerys I Targaryen’s son and heir.

The deaths of Baelon and his beloved wife, Queen Alysanne Targaryen, left Jaehaerys distraught and bedridden. During the last two years of Jaehaerys’ reign, Otto essentially ruled the Seven Kingdoms as Hand while his daughter Alicent Hightower nursed the ailing King.

Viserys I Targaryen, Jaehaerys’s cousin and the new King, kept Otto as his Hand. He became enmity with Prince Daemon Targaryen, the King’s brother and master of coins. Otto talked the King out of his job and did it again when Viserys made Daemon master of laws.

However, he came to rue this when Daemon was appointed commander of the City Watch, as the prince thrived in this new role with 2,000 men under his charge. Otto feared that if Daemon ever became King, he would become a second Maegor the Cruel. He told his brother, the Lord of the Hightower, about his worries. From this point on, Otto wanted Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen to take over as queen after her father died.

After the passing of Queen Aemma Arryn in 106 AD, Viserys’ daughter Alicent became King Otto’s second wife. Otto was fired as Hand in 109 AC because he kept pressuring Viserys to name Alicent’s sons as the Iron Throne’s heir instead of Princess Rhaenyra.

Otto went back to Oldtown because he had no place at court anymore. There was still a “queen’s party” (the greens), made up of strong lords who were friendly with Queen Alicent and fought for the rights of Alicent’s sons.

After Lord Lyonel Strong died in 120 AD, Otto returned as Hand. When Viserys died in 129 AD, Otto was crucial in making his eldest grandson King Aegon II, even though Viserys’s last will named Rhaenyra as his heir. This lack of respect led to the Dance of the Dragons civil war.

The Dance of Dragons and Ser Otto Hightower

Otto was the Hand of the King to his grandson Aegon II Targaryen at the start of The Dance of the Dragons. The confinement of Lord Lyman Beesbury in the black cells was directed by Otto, according to Orwyle. Instructing him to watch for any signs of betrayal toward King Aegon II, Ser Gwayne Hightower, Otto’s son, was named second in command of the gold cloaks.

The battle-tested Prince Daemon Targaryen was part of Rhaenyra Targaryen’s group, the blacks, fighting Aegon’s greens. During his pre-war adventures, he had made many enemies, including Otto. As soon as Blood and Cheese, Daemon’s killers, killed Prince Jaehaerys Targaryen, Aegon told the ratcatchers in King’s Landing to die too. Otto brought 100 cats to the Red Keep.

Otto tried to make friends with the Kingdom of the Three Daughters, which was at odds with the prince. They were very important in getting through the Velaryon siege during the Battle of the Gullet. Otto tried to make a deal with Qoren Martell, Prince of Dorne, but failed.

At a time when Prince Daemon had taken Harrenhal, and many houses had declared for the blacks, Aegon II thought Otto’s diplomatic style was careless. Ser Criston Cole, the Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, took Otto’s place as Hand, even though Queen Alicent Hightower, Otto’s daughter and Aegon’s mother, begged him not to. After he was fired, Otto’s diplomatic attempts paid off. As he had said, Otto was the first person Rhaenyra killed because he was a rogue after King’s Landing fell in 130 AC.
